I burst through the front door ready for a fight. Chance doesn’t even move from his spot in the middle of the kitchen. He’s standing, hands on hips, shirt conveniently missing, with no idea I’ve even come in. I guess I should have slammed the door if I’d wanted immediate attention but my manners kept me from doing any slamming. That, and the fact I’d hate to damage the old door no matter how angry I might be.

I stand for a minute, watching Chance tilt his head left and then right, considering whatever the hell he’s considering. He slides one hand up to his jaw and the muscles in his back flex just enough to have me forgetting for a split second why I’m annoyed. The more work we do here the better he looks, heaving around all the heavy equipment and construction supplies has him adding more muscle to what was already a dangerously muscular body. No one would ever guess he used to spend all day behind a computer.

But his stupid computer is what’s got me all rankled. He can’t just put things on the Internet without asking my permission. I don’t want to open myself up to scrutiny from a million random strangers, not that a million people would ever look at that website, but I don’t want even ten people to think they can give me advice or comment on my body or voice. I know how quickly things can get out of hand when people are anonymous—the last thing I want is more attention.

I clear my throat and Chance turns to look at me, a hint of a smile already pulling at the corners of his mouth. If I look angry he must not notice, because he looks like he’s having a great day and I’m only making it better.

“You’re here! I thought you were coming later.” Chance motions for me to come closer. “I was planning on having all this worked out before you got here so I could surprise you.”

I try to ignore his enthusiasm and keep my original goal in mind. I need to set him straight, not get sucked into whatever he’s been doing this morning.

“I need to talk to you first.”

The enthusiasm falls a bit from his face. “Sure. What’s up?”

“Can you put on a shirt?”

“A shirt?” Chance looks down and we both end up looking at his bare chest for a few beats longer than necessary. When he straightens up, I’m distracted by the light brown trail of hair running from his belly button down to the waistband of his jeans. When I look up he’s staring right at me, a mix of interest and confusion on his face.

“Yes, please.” I’m talking about his shirt, but the rest of my body reacts like I’ve requested something else entirely.

Chance moves back to the kitchen and rummages around for his missing T-shirt. This is becoming a theme for this kitchen. Chance half-naked and me with my eyes bugging out of my head.
